I've been away from the blogosphere for quite a few weeks, and I do apologize! With the end of the semester, finals, preparing for my trip to England in two weeks and staring a new internship, it's been quite hectic!

As I start a new chapter of my life, I feel like I have outgrown Style My Happiness. Going into the blogging world, I didn't have a purpose, I kind of went where it took me and in the end Style My Happiness became more of a personal style blog. Through it, I have learned a lot, made some amazing friends and discovered some very talented bloggers. But now, it's time to move a little deeper.

I've just started a new blog: Yelena Petrovna, and that's where I will be blogging from here on. Although the new blog will have some similarities to Style My Happiness, it will also be quite different. Here are a few highlights and goals:

Do you remember this post? Take a minute to read it. The new blog will reflect those ideas.
I'm in the process of establishing a new feature for the blog featuring some of the successful women among us - business owners, survivors, creative geniuses, fellow bloggers, etc. Women who inspire me and I hope will in turn inspire you as well. At this point it looks like it will be short profile style with a q&a.
I'll be documenting my European travels/study abroad trip this June on my new blog - lots of photos with that so I hope you tune in!
I will also be documenting some of my trials and successes of my year as editor in chief of a college newspaper come fall - so if you're at all into journalism or publishing (helpful blogging tips included), I hope to have a feature dedicated to all things journalism.
Although I will do some occasional outfit posts, it won't be the focus of the blog anymore.
The goal of the new blog is to serve as a positive place where women can come and get inspired, whether it's by hearing an inspiring testimony or reading a good quote.
I'm also hoping to add a Dear Abby style feature where readers can send in personal questions on any subject and get an answer back. Each question will be supported, if applicable, by a Bible verse and of course, a prayer, so ideally the words won't be coming from, but from God working through me.
Lots of other content on fashion, life, confidence, happiness and all things beautiful and inspiring.

I hope you will continue along with me on this journey! Take a minute to follow the new blog and the new twitter profile (which features daily inspirational pick me up quotes, pep talks, personal tweets and links to helpful stories and inspiring blogs).

It's been such a great journey so far. Every one of your comments has been read and appreciated and made me smile. Thank you for everything and I hope we stay in touch!

CORAL POLKA DOTS

On my lunch break today, I stopped in for a few minutes at one of my favorite thrift stores and came out with a few great finds. (Is that weird that I have favorite thrift stores??). I found this great jacket for $5, it's Ralph Lauren and in great condition. Plus, this color is all sorts of popular right now, so I'm quite excited about the purchase. Plus I found three skirts for $5 a piece- a red, orange and the prettiest blue pencil skirt! So excited to style them! :)

And I realize that the leggings are a bit off in the outfit, but I always try to dress modestly so I needed the leggings to balance out the short dress. Plus, it was quite windy and cold today!:)

In other news - I got the internship I interviewed for last week! I start May 16th! It's such a great opportunity and I'm very excited about it! :)

I love ladylike dresses, formfitting enough, but not too revealing. My sister once told me a quote she read somewhere and it went something like "Your dress should be tight enough to show you're a woman and loose enough to show you're a lady". Wise words. I think there is something more glamorous about a dress like that over a tight, short revealing dress. A woman should be somewhat a mystery. It's part of our allure! :)

I love this dress, it's comfy, chic and bold. The color is stunning and since it's so simple can be styled different ways! :)

INTERNSHIP INTERVIEWS

I had a big Economics exam this morning. And then a huge internship interview. So although the weather has been so gorgeous today, my day was quite stressful. I love this top, it's comfy and the roses on the front are so beautiful! I don't own a real suit, although as graduation nears, I really need to invest in one, so I had to work with individual pieces in my closet to come up with a professional interview outfit. I think I did pretty good! :) This was my first professional big girl interview, for a serious internship, so I was pretty much a nervous wreck, but I hope I get the internship, and this next week of waiting is going to torture me. I love this cover from ELLE, March 2011. This Gucci outfit has graced many fashion blogs and fashion magazines. When I ran across this skirt for $3 at a thrift store, I fell in love with the color and immediately thought of the above Gucci ensemble and so I had to buy it.

TENNIS MATCH

Yesterday, it was 80+ degrees. Today, scattered showers and a high of 50 degrees. Missouri weather never ceases to amaze me.

Because the day was just so beautiful yesterday, warm sunshine with a breeze, I ventured out to play some tennis late afternoon with my siblings. I haven't played tennis or any sort of sport that requires heavy use of my arms in like years. I didn't think that I played very hard, but today my right arm is ridiculously sore. So sore, that I can barely hold a glass full of water with my right hand, it just gives out in pain and weakness. So pathetic and not cool right arm! This makes me determined to start playing tennis more often, a) practice hopefully will improve my game (at this point, I pretty much suck, I am seriously athletically disabled) and b) my weakling arms need strengthening and muscles, big time! :)

I love this skirt because of the fun colors and patterns. It's a bit loose on me, but the stretchy band around the waist helps keep it from falling off! :)

NYFW: JENNI KAYNE [fall 2011]

NYFW has officially began, and although I envy those that are there in NY right now for the shows, I get to live vicarously through websites and blogs that are covering the shows this year. Fashionista.com did a review of Jenni Kayne's Fall 2011 Show here. This is the first time I've heard of this designer, but I'm loving her designs.

What inspired me from Jenni's collection:

> the simplicity

> the luxe fabrics - the texture spectrum is amazing. I especially love how she paired contrasting textures like a maxi sik skirt and a bulky sweater. Love.

> the colors. especially that bright pink/magenta color and the gold/silver paired together, and of course, beige. Beige is hard to pull off because you want to find just the right shade so it flatters your skin tone, not washes you out. I'm still looking for my shade of beige, and this inspires me to renew my efforts on my hunt for my beige wardrobe addition.

> the pink lips. Although this is the fall line, I've been thinking about trying the pink lips this spring. Just like the beige above, I just need to find my shade. I was thinking light pink, but this bright pink seems so much daring and tempting now. I've been wearing the red lip quite often lately, so I'm super excited to try the pink in the future.

SEQUINS AND NAVY SILK

I'm loving Yeojin Bae's, an Australian designer, new spring line.

All of the pieces are structured, yet flowy and flattering, in the most marvelous materials and shapes. I'm especially coveting the sequins and the navy blue. Once again, I do wish these pieces were a bit more in my price range! :) Below are the pieces on my wish list! Simply stunning aren't they?? :)

oh, and this video? totally makes me want to move to Paris and learn French. So. Lovely.

THE FLYNN SKIRT

Outside, it's cold, snowy and cold. I really can't wait until spring. Which is why these skirts are looking so happy and tempting right now. The bright colors, the stripes, the shape - so beautiful. I'm wishing the price tag was a bit lower though. :( Ironically, I just cut out a picture out of the latest Marie Claire and taped it to my inspiration board of a girl wearing a skirt similar to this with a cute cardigan and pearls and a ladylike handbag.
Oh, and I love the big bow blouse she's wearing. It's quite perfect. These photos have me dreaming of spring and wearing fun skirts with bare legs, sandals, cute blouses, lady like cardigans in the prettiest colors. Click here to see more! :)

GIRL STYLE CRUSH

Joanna Hillman, senior fashion market editor of Harpers Bazzar (first, can I have her title and job?? so cool), did a series of outfit photos in December - 30 outfits in 30 days.

Now, I have a total style crush on her. Above are some of my favorite outfits that she wore.

I'm now wanting to wear more:

-chunky boots

-fur: coat (check), vest (check), scarf (check), hat (borrow brother's big fur hat)!

-sequins (I just bought a sequin black skirt for $5 @ Charlotte Russe, I have yet to wear it!)

-military green and khaki pieces mixed in with unexpected colors: coral, lavender

-red lip (just bought a red lipstick, and I've worn it a few times, loving it!)

-side messy braid (my hair is just barely grown out to where I can make a messy braid)

-long, cross bags

-a long black skirt (recent purchase - long DKNY black skirt for $9!)

Wow, I actually own a lot of this list in my current wardrobe, or some version of the list. Exciting, now I just need to play around with these additions/looks and see how I can mix into my wardrobe, make it my style.

Remember this shopping trip a few weeks ago? When I bought these shoes? Well, I've worn them a few times already, but this is the first time they actually made it into outfit photos on the blog. So, my awesome blog friends, meet the almost as amazing shoes, shoes - welcome to my lovely blog. These shoes really aren't my style, not very girly, no super high heels, and the color is brown, but at times kinda forest green, yet I still love them. They're super comfy and cute, in a unique way.

In other random news, this semester I'm taking a yoga class to meet my activity class requirement. Now, I've never really done yoga, other than the units high school PE classes do on yoga, so it's really been an experience. I've only gone a few times so far, but I'm really starting to enjoy it. It's at noon two times a week, so it's perfect to relax and rejuvenate through out the day and week. I'm quite excited about learning more as the semester progresses. Do you do yoga? What's your opinion on the topic?

I personally have always been a bit skeptical about it - all that bending, you probably have to be so flexible and that's not me at all, and it doesn't seem all that relaxing or a workout, I mean stretching. Oh and all those weird poses and their names? Downward dog, mountain, warrior, really? Now, I'm seeing it differently. My yoga teacher has been great about explaining everything and helping us really understand this thing called yoga. I really am excited about learning more! :)

I loved ELLE's February editorial with Katie Holmes. Ever since Dawson's Creek, I've been fascinated with Katie Holmes - she's no supermodel, but she's pretty as the girl next door look, and even through the years as she developed her personal style into something more sophisticated, her simple, girl next door vibe has stayed the same.

I loved this editorial especially because it was so simple and classic. A little black dress, sultry makeup, and loose curls give instant glamour to the photos.

I'm also quite excited about her latest role in The Kennedy's - a documentary about John and Jackie Kennedy. I've been obsessed with them as a couple and especially Jackie and her style since fifth grade. Seriously - fifth grade. How many fifth graders do you know that read every book they could find about about Jackie Kennedy Onassis? It all started when in fifth grade, we had an event called Night of the Notables. All year we worked on our research projects and costumes where we chose a person from history who we thought had somehow influenced the US history and we had to do a lengthy report, presentation and finally on the Night of Notables we got to dress up as our person and set up a poster board in the school gym where parents can go around and ask you questions about who you're supposed to be and why you chose who used to be. I, of course, was Jackie Kennedy, and ever since then, she's been one of my style idols. :)

TRENDS BY GOLDEN GLOBES

Did you watch the Golden Globes this weekend? I was out of town at a church conference so I didn't get to watch it live, but I have caught up on who wore what! I want to say that by far this year's gowns were simply beautiful! Every gown was the essence of old school Hollywood glamour with a touch of romance and the classics.

Here are four trends that I'm hoping to incorporate into my wardrobe and styling this season.

Blush Neutrals:

There were an overwhelming amount of beautiful dresses in the prettiest, softest pinks, reds, tans and whites. Neutral, simple, powder colored gowns that hinted at the upcoming spring season. These colors can be hard to pull off, especially tans and light pinks and peaches. You have to be very careful to pick just the right shade of pink/beige/tan to suit your skin tone. If you pick the wrong tone, it could completely wash you out, but if you pick out the right one and add a touch of bronzer or blush (depending on the shade), you'll suddenly appear radiant, a blushing beauty. Take some hints from some of the ladies above who decided to wear their right shade!

Glamorous Black:

As seen above, this year's Globes proved that the LBD is classy for any occasion - even something as fancy as the Golden Globes. This season to avoid looking drab and depressing in all black (which is known to happen if you wear all black, and wear it wrong!), try adding fun surprises to your all black outfit, whether it be a pant suit, ball gown or a casual little black dress - look for things like pleating, one shoulder necklines, embroidery, or any other fun little surprise. Lately, I personally have been playing around with a lot of color, but I'm kind of excited to try and wear a few more outfits with a LBD or all black.

All That Texture:

This year's Globes were all about simplicity - simple silhouettes, classic hair styles, neutral colors, but what made each dress special and fancy were the little details. Specifically, the texture. There was everything from lace to velvet to sequins and tafetta. How to wear texture in your everyday wardrobe? Look for items that feel good. The silky blouse you may reserve for special occasions - wear it casually paired with a cardigan and jeans. Or maybe that velvet jacket that you purchased a long time ago for a new year's celebration - make it work with jeans and a white tee. Then there's lace and sequins. Nowadays, you can go into about any store and find something with lace or sequins - they're all the rage, and now can be worn during the day, even to the office! :) You just have to pair it with a good amount of casual or professional in order to balance things out.

The Mermaid Silhouette:

There's nothing like old school glamour like the form flattering mermaid silhouette. I think it flatters every size and shape, giving your curves and coverage and making you feel oh so gorgeous. Unless you would like to wear a evening gown to run errands or to the office, this trend can only be incorporated for any event that requires gorgeous fancy gowns - getting married? try this silhouette. Or maybe you're just gong to a black tie event, this silhouette will flatter you, promise! :)

Oh how I wish I had an event to wear one of these dresses to! It's so hard to pick a favorite this year since each dress was so beautiful! What did you think of the Globes fashion this year? Did you have a favorite??

I love January. Because that's when practically every store has huge clearance events go get rid of their last year's inventory, marking tons of items 40%-90%!! I've made quite a bit of new purchases super cheap as of late - as you can see above. :)

I saw this blouse at Target and I had to get it - the color and the material were just so beautiful. And the tuxedo jacket which I bought a few weeks ago has been quite useful in my wardrobe.

I'm heading back to school tomorrow after about a month off for winter break, so I'm signing off early. But look forward to another blog post later about this weekend's Golden Globes and what I got from all of it. :)

DAILY OUTFIT: CASUAL FRIDAY

Yes, I realize my haircut does not look flattering on me at all in these photos, but I can explain. :) Combine a new shampoo (which clearly doesn't work on my hair), with no effort on the styling leaves a frizzy awkward mess. Since I took these outfit photos first thing in the morning, the hair got some serious styling afterwards. :)

I am super excited. Because I made my first sale on the Style My Happiness Vintage Etsy Shop. A lovely customer purchased two dresses listed in the shop - so only 6 left - stop by and see if there's anything for you! :)

I won't bore you with a long post today since it is Friday - well almost Saturday, aka, the weekend!! :) What are your plans for this weekend? This is my last weekend before school starts Tuesday for the Spring semester. There is a church conference in Oklahoma that I'm thinking about going to and maybe doing some thrifting. :)

DAILY OUTFIT: SNOW DAYS

So, I think I'm back to doing outfit photos. I've slipped up since the holidays, but I can pretty much summarize my uniform during these past few weeks: it looks like the above photos - a blouse, a sweater layered on top, a pencil skirt and boots. Comfy, cute and layering keeps me warm. But, no more. I think it's time to go back to making a bit more creative outfits and stepping out of this little fashion rut. :)

I just started reading Cure for the Common life by Max Lucado and I've found it fascinating and quite helpful. It's about finding how your "sweet spot" and how you can live the life God intended to you and bring Glory to His plan. For a college student who has no idea what I want to do as a career for the rest of my life - the book is God-sent. Really.

The summary is this:

Use your uniqueness (what you do)

to make a big deal out of God (why you do it)

every day of your life (where you do it).

You do so by combing God's glory, your everyday life and your strengths and where the three overlap is your sweet spot - what you were made to do, the reason you're on this Earth.

I'm only half way in, but already I find myself determining my strengths and answering the questions brought up in the book. No, I still don't know what I'm supposed to do, but now at least I have a guide of sorts, and I'm hoping that combined with lots of praying, will at least lead me in the right direction! :)

CHAOS & CHANGE.

I like the look of this room. The simplicity, the white, the raw wood, the feel of order and control.

I think I like it so much because it's the opposite of my life right now.

Which calls for brutal honesty to my (few) readers on the blog.

These past few weeks, I've been feeling kind of unsettled, almost like a ghost version of myself. The holidays were a great distraction that swept me up in a feeling of contentment and happiness, until January 2nd, of course, when the Christmas decorations were taken down, the lights hidden until next year, the work schedule back, the to-do lists, and the cold reality of life rushed back into my little corner of the world.

Hence the major lack of posts, updates, photos, and frankly lack of everything.

Although I'm not a big fan of change, especially sudden change, I still seem to attract it and crave it.

I think in part it has to do with the fact that I have a very short attention span, especially when it comes to things that I'm not truly passionate about and committed to. Also, I get bored easily unless there are challenges and potential for growth and improvement - something to motivate me to keep trying and pushing myself and giving my time and abilities to.

Which is why at the age of 19, I've had more jobs than some people have had in their lifetime, and in a variety of fields/industries. I'm not even joking - the longest I've had a job is a year, just barely a year. Mostly because I tend to pick up extra jobs during summer vacations to keep me busy and end up working 2-3 jobs for a few months. Now, the good thing is that it's taught me how to adapt and accept change, new work environments, expanded my horizons, helped me network and build professional contacts and relationships, gave me great work experience, pay and made me quite good at job hunting, all with God's incredible help and grace, of course.

Today marks my last day at one of my current jobs - the one that I said I've had the longest. The day is bittersweet. I loved the job, it was a position that worked with my school schedule and was good for a college student. The environment was great, but the past few months I've debated quitting and been praying about it and discussing it with my parents [who serve as my advisors on practically everything these days]. I really needed the income due to the upcoming expensive London trip this summer, but the 3 jobs [+school and everything else] was really taking a toll on me, both emotionally and physically, on top of that my need for change was starting to take over my love for the job, which made it harder and harder to go to work every day, making me unhappy, stressed and filled with headaches. So I prayed and worried and fretted. To be honest, it left me a bad employee at the workplace, in my opinion, although I tried not to let it show or change my attitude at work. The other day I mentioned my schedule to my supervisor which conflicted with my work schedule so with mutual agreement it was decided it would be easier to hire someone new who could work all the hours instead of cutting my hours significantly. That was on Thursday, and today is my last day. And yes, I was sad to lose the income, and the job which I did quite enjoy, but at the same time I felt the greatest sense of relief and freedom.

It's amazing how God works. He knew it was time for me to move on, to what, I'm not quite sure, but it was time and He arranged the circumstances so perfectly and flawlessly that everything fell into place in literally hours.

I'm not sure what I'll be doing next to fill the time I worked at this job, but I know God has something in mind. I've started job searching and contacting some of my professional contacts, updating my resume and of course, praying. I'm quite excited about what the future holds. In fact, I can feel myself coming back around to me, some of my dreams and hopes are starting to get their color back, my old ambition and take charge attitute is slowly coming back. In fact, I almost have to rein it in and breathe and pray and let God go first and show me what His will is.

I've also been debating about the blog. Yes, I should have more time to post before school really picks up again, but I'm not sure if I'll be posting or not. I want to take some of this "downtime" in my life to reflect on my priorities, dust off some old dreams and work on my relationship with God.

I would love to "share" this process with you and write it out, since it does help me sort out my thoughts and all, but I know it's a far cry from what this blog has been up to know - mainly fashion and fluff. So future posting is still in the air.

NEW YEAR GOALS

I've never been quite fond of "New Year's Resolutions".
I think the idea of them is quite novel and exciting and inspiring, but the reality? Not so much.
After all, how many of us actually stick to our new year's resolutions? Not many!

So, this year instead of making cliche New Years Resolutions, I'm calling them goals.
And praying hard that I have the strength to stick to them! ;)

Here are a few:

Eat healthier. Some of the ways I plan to do so is to start packing my lunch instead of relying on going out, fast food or school cafeteria food. Also, bringing along lots of healthy snacks since I spend my entire day running around and staying super busy between school and all my jobs. Finally, I hope to start making meal plans for the week ahead and shopping each weekend to stock up to avoid random stops at the grocery store when I'm hungry and grab a pack of chips or something lame like that.
Exercise. I've gotten quite lazy and in the past few months have completely stopped exericising ;( The result is a few too many extra pounds making a lot of my clothes much too tight for wear :( So to be realistic I'm planning to start working out 3-5 times a week, with a minimum of 30 minutes/day. It's not much, but it's a start for out of shape lazy me! :) Plus, I'm taking a yoga class at school 2 days a week for 50 minutes so that will make this goal a little easier. And, I recently bought two work out DVDs that I can do from home to better fit my schedule - I'm quite excited about them! :)
Spirituality. These past few months I've gotten so busy and stressed with all my responsibilities that my spiritual life has pretty much died down to barely burning embers. I'm hoping to start reading my Bible daily again, getting more involved in my church, spending more time doing good for others, and quite possibly starting a bible study for teen girls in my church. It's something that's been on my mind for awhile now and I've felt the Lord calling me, but I've kept putting it on the back burner. This topic deserves some serious praying.
Love me and what I am and what I have. This one is tough for me. All too easily I start to envy others for having something better than, being prettier, smarter, more succesful, more outgoing. And it's done serious damage to my self-esteem. I resolve to start loving me the way I am. I resolve to be happy with what I have instead of always trying to compete with everyone else. It will be tough, but it's much needed.
Save. My money habits have gotten quite a bit out of control, so this year I resolve to put myself on a strict budget - aka, not to buying anything unless it's absolutely needed, ex: bills, hygiene products, food, etc... It sounds a bit extreme, but I'm going on a study abroad trip to London in June and it's quite expensive so I really need to start saving for that. I have to keep reminding myself that my month in London and traveling around Europe will be totally worth it for not spending another penny on clothes and shoes and entertainement for the next 6 months. London, London, London! :)
Unclutter my life. This goes for both physical things and emotional responsibilities. Last semester I almost went crazy with all my jobs, extracurricular activities, school and a milliion other things. This semester, I'll try to scale down so I have more time to read Bible, spend time with family and friends, work on creative projects and time to breathe. :) Physically, I've made a lot of progress on getting rid of junk, but there still quite a ways to go. So look forward to me getting rid of trinkets, books, magazines, clothes and shoes. :) hmm, blog sale??? :) Anyone interested??
And lots of other life things that are really quite important. :)

So this post was quite lengthy. Oops. And perphaps too personal? But it is my blog, so I shall write! ;) Plus, hopefully by sharing it in writing on a blog, I'll be held accountable? Eh? Maybe. :) We'll see ;)

A CHRISTMAS STORY

Merry Christmas darlings!

I sure hope it was a beautiful one for every single one of you.

I hope it was filled with familiy and friends, a little bit of snow, lots of gifts, laughter & blessings.

Mine was quite lovely. I had a few days off from work, school and my other engagements, so it was very low key. I got to spend a lot of time with my family and of course last minute Christmas shopping! :) We even got a little bit of snow Christmas eve/day. Beautiful! :)

Our local ice skating rink had a free admission Christmas day so my siblings and I decided to go. It was the three youngest first time time going ice skating, so it was quite an experience! :)

I'm quite sure it's near to impossible to get a decent picture of all of us. Everyone is always doing their own thing. The one below is the best shot out of like 10. :) [It's missing two of my siblings - one taking the picture and the other stayed home with my parents since he's only 2]

He's 2 years younger than me and so much taller than me. In fact a lot of my younger siblings are taller than me. what a shorty! :)

My little Christmas tree and huge windows (for which I just bought curtains - long story!) Plus all the gifts I got last minute - it was a simple Christmas this year, but it was blessed :)

They're so sillly - I love them :)

Christmas Eve dinner. So delicious - featuring many traditional Ukranian dishes. My mom hasn't been feeling very well, so my 16 year old sister cooked it all by herself. She's so amazing - she cooked and baked all day.

Okay, so confession time.

Christmas is in 4 days. 4 days!!!???
And guess how much gifts I've purchased thus far?

Like not even a fourth of what I have on my list.

I do believe I have a good excuse, end of the semester, finals, work, etc..

And now Christmas is almost here and I'm just now thinking about starting Christmas shopping.

Oh, this is so bad.

I'll be one of the crazy last minute shoppers on Christmas Eve.

Waiting in line for 20 minutes. In traffic for another 20. Shopping all day.

It'll be wonderful - I'm trying to keep a positive attitude about it, in case you can't tell! ;)

CHRISTMAS CHEER

I'm. Done. Finally. Done with the Fall semester. And finals week. Which was kind of brutal. But it's over. In celebration, two of my sisters and my little brother decided on an improptu trip to Branson for some shopping, thrifting and dinner. It was amazing and provided some much needed R&R after the stress and craziness of the past two weeks.

Here are some photos, well, a lot of photos from last night. It was so pretty with all the Chrismas decorations and that energy in the air, that Christmas spirit. I love it :)

I am so blessed to have these two as my sisters and my friends. I adore them. They make me laugh, they're pretty and quite amazing :)

This is my favorite picture from last night, and quite possibly ever, of us three. Because it is so us. A bit blurry, laughter, silliness and sisters. I think I'll frame it :)

I also went a little crazy with the shopping last night. A little. :) But, I was in the Christmas spirit, I guess. For myself, that is :) I found so many great deals, I just had to finally give in and buy something for myself, or a lot of something. Because you see, lately it's been all about giving and gifts and not wanting to spend money on myself, even though I clearly needed new boots, as mine have worn out to holes on the toes - it's quite embarrasing.

As it turns out, I sold some of my textbooks and had some extra cash so I didn't feel too bad about buying myself a pair of new boots. Err, 3 actually :)

Let me explain. Charlotte Russe was having this big sale yesterday. (And I love Charlotte Russe) Everything in the store was on sale. Tons of stuff for $5 and $10 and all shoes and boots for $20. So of course, I bought 2 pairs of boots for $20 and a pair of tan ankle boots for $5 (last size clearence - couldn't find the photo online - sorry!). Then i found a cute pajama for $6, and a few tops and a jacket for $5 or under. And ended up with two bags full of stuff for about $80. I was floored, and felt a little bit spoiled! :) But, I totally deserved it! :)

I got a pair similar to these, except mine have a zipper up the back. And they're a more tan coolor than reddish brown. If you read my blog, then you may have noticed that I wear my tan riding boots, a lot. So much that they now have holes at the toes. So it was time for a replacement pair. I'll have to do an outfit post soon to show them off! :)

I didn't buy these black ones because I already have black boots that are in wearable condition, so I didn't really need another pair. But I loved that these were up to my knees and so pretty, so I may go back and buy them. We'll see ;)

I bought these except in a different color. It's more greyish/greenish. They're quite perfect and I've been wanting a pair in this style since they've taken over style blogs and magazines this past fall. Wearing them at work today! ;)

Then I stumbled across a little hippie store and found this gorgeous canvas of New York City. For $30. Now, it's hanging above my bed and it makes me so happy.

I also found a few other great deals, but they'll have to wait to be introduced to you in later outfit posts! :)

Can you believe Christmas is a week from today? With the business of the final weeks of the semester and finals week, December has passed by way too quickly. I hope you're having a great holiday season so far.

I adore Michael Kors' Holiday 2010 Ad campaign and the entire collection (found here) is absolutely beautiful. His items look luxurious, yet classic and beautiful.

This past weekend we got some snow, but not much, more of a dusting - still it makes me excited and has me wishing for a white Christmas - and for finals to be over afer this week! :) With the snow, came the cold and it reminds me that I need a winter coat - I wouldn't mind having the furry scarf or warm knits from these photos! It's about 16 degrees out there tonight. Brrr..

At Sunday's church service, one of the sermon's was based on this verse: "Do you not know that you are the temple of God and that the Spirit of God dwells in you? If anyone defiled the temple of God, God will destroy him. For the temple of God is holy, which temple you are." -1 Cor. 3:16-17

Now, I've heard this verse before, probably multiple times, but this time I really thought about it. My body, my heart, I am the temple of God. That means that God lives in His temple and Me. And yes, ever since I was a little girl I've known that God lives inside my heart, but that my heart and I am His temple? That was kind of new to me.

At face value, it's kind of like duh, but if anyone has read the Old Testemant, God's temples through out history have been beautiful and holy. The beautiful reflects the outer appearance and the holy describes the soul.

So I have to take care of my body, my appearance, both physically, mentally and spiritually because it is the temple of God. Does God want to live in my body as it is now? When people look at me, do they see a temple of God? Doesn't that give exercising, and eating right, and taking the time to dress in the morning in a way that pleases God seem so much more worth it? Because God doesn't want to live in a body that's lazy, full of processed foods, bad habits and other unflattering characteristics. No, I'm not saying God only likes physically healthy and attractive people, no, He loves everyone. But ask yourself, would you want to live in such body? So if you don't then why would the God of the universe want to? Yes, He loves us as we are, but he doesn't want to live in a temple that doesn't respect Him and doesn't make an effort to at least make it welcoming.

And of course, any temple, without God's holy prescense is nothing but a pretty building. This is where our actions, thoughts and spiritual life come into play. When someone is in your presence, do they feel like they're in the presence of something bigger, better, powerful, the presence of God? Do people leave happier after talking to you? More inspired, blessed? The purpose of God's temple is a place to worship and unburden. Can the people in our lives come to us and worship with us? Unburden themselves? Uplift their spirits?

I don't mean to preach, but this time when I heard this verse in church on Sunday, it made me humble and ashamed. A lot of times I take my body for granted, I don't take care of it as I should (work out, eat healthy, etc...), and many times, I slip up and let my spiritual health deteriate. My temple becomes grey and dusty and tired. People in my presence leave feeling bad about themselves or their circumstances or entirely avoid me. Somedays even I don't want to be in my presence, so why would God? Why would He want to live in a body that doesn't want to communicate with Him? To put herself in her best condition for Him? To make the effort to keep herself clean and happy?

What a humbling verse. It makes me think of Mary, and when she was told she would carry the son of God. I wonder if many of the same thoughts ran through her. Now, God is reaching out to Me and you and saying He wants his presence to live inside you, to make your body and your heart His temple, His Holy residense. What an honor, but as with any honor come responsibilities and much effort.

I pray that God helps me better my temple to make it worthy for the God of the universe to bless with His presence.

THE NATASHA TRADE

"In the sex industry today, the most popular and valuable women are from Russia and the Ukraine. Authorities in the Ukraine estimate that more than 100,000 women were trafficked during the previous decade"

I've spent the past few hours studying for my Criminology final on Monday, the chapter we're testing about is on Morality and how it relates to crime - sex, drugs, and the law. In the prostitution section o f my textbook chapter, there was a inset extra box titleed the "The Natasha Trade: International Trafficking in Prostitution".

"Former Soviet republics such as Belarus, Latvia, Moldova, Russia, and the Ukraine have become major suppliers of women to sex industries all over the world. These young women are the 'Natashas' who fuel the international sex trade".

Yes, I've read articles and books and new stories on prostitution, human trafficking and the industry of sex trafficking, but to me it all seemed part of another world. Bad as it sounds, to me it was like, so what? It doesn't effect me, I don't anyone involved in this industry, who cares?

But, these statistics hit kind of close to home. I mean, I was born in Ukraine, raised there until I was eight. My ancestors go way back to Russian and Ukranian roots. My great-grandparents, grandparents and even parents lived through the Communist rule in Europe - they were persecuted for their religious beliefs, but still, Ukraine is still very much a part of me.

Except, I feel like I've lived in this little bubble. I'm a Ukranian girl who moved to the US for a promise of a better life and I do now lead a better life - a life overflowing with blessings that most days I take for granted. Yet there are 100,000 women in the past decade that have been promised amazing jobs as nannies or marriages, promises of a better life and were instead tricked to lead a life of working in the sex trade. There are thousands of girls like me - Ukranian, young, hopeful for a better life, ambitious, taking a risk for a new life and instead they end up in some foreign country, working in the sex trade, usually with no way to escape.

Yes, the sex trafficking trade still seems far away from my cozy little bubble of a world, but now it seems a little more realistic. It makes me sick to read these statistics, makes me angry. I wish I could help somehow. But, right now, I can't, so instead I'll be praying. Maybe one day God will grant me an opportunity to help these women, but until then my prayers are with those who find themselves living in those horrible conditions and all those people and organizations that are trying to make a change.

DAILY OUTFIT: THE PROPOSAL

I'm pretty sure I'm the only person under 50 in my town who wears brooches. And, I don't care. I love them - they're so versatile and can give a little sparkle to any outfit. :) So there.

So, I went to see a play at the Springfield Little Theater this past weekend – Miracle on the 34^th Street.

Right before the play started, the director was on stage thanking the sponsors, making announcements when suddenly the guy playing Santa Clause ran on stage and said that he had just got an interesting letter and had to grant a guy’s wish in the audience. He took out a folded paper out of his pocket and started reading the sweetest love letter/ proposal. The only phrase I remember is you’re the blood in my veins – a totally random phrase I know, but it melted my heart, and I can be quite cynical when it comes to sappy romantic things.

At first the audience was murmuring, “Is this for real? Or part of the play?” I couldn’t quite see this couple, since we were sitting on the balcony, but I do believe that the guy got on one knee to propose and then the spotlight found them and when Santa finished reading the letter and asked the girl by name to stand up because her boyfriend had a very important question to ask her, she said yes. It was so sweet.

No one but Santa and the guy knew about this, not even the director or the lights guy. By the end, everyone in the audience was going “awe” and applauding on their feet. It was quite lovely.

I have a weak spot for proposals. The romantic, the random, the ordinary ones, the questions “Will you marry me?” is just so fascinating. The fact that one person is asking for the other person to spend the rest of their lives together as companions, to me, seems like such a big step. I dream of my proposal one day, and I’m not even a very romantic person, but there’s just something about the moment.

How were you proposed to or how did you propose if you’re currently engage or married? Was it like you dreamed and planned, better, worse? If you’re still single like me, what do you think of the subject? Do you dream of the moment or leave the thought alone until the time comes for it?

Speaking of Christmas, I finally put up my [small] Christmas tree and my handful of Christmas decor. Nothing fancy this year, but here are some sneak peeks! :) [The blue jacket matched, so it of course had to be photographed!]

They're kind of hard to see in these photos, but the two photos in the gold frames are a find from a flea market trip this past weekend. I stumbled on a booth with a table full of old photos. I love old photos - there is just a charm about them. These two were my favorites, and only at $2 a piece, a good price (minus the frames). They're photos of what looks like a prom, maybe military since some a lot of the guys are wearing uniforms. All the girls dresses are so beautiful. I'm in love with the photos. They're just so magical...

DAILY OUTFIT: BOLD TIGHTS

I love bold tights - colored or patterned, I love them. I aim to have every color and a variety of patterns in my wardrobe, eventually. Why? Because I think they have a potential to make any outfit go from boring to instant glam. Some people say they can't pull of bold color tights, and I say anyone I can, if I can as a petite short girl, then you can too :)

A few pointers for beginners:

Pick a color you're comfortable with (other than black, brown or nude). Maybe start with navy, then go bolder, lighter or brighter.
Matching is okay, but I think it's more fun to put together two or three colors with some neutrals. For example use a black and/or white skirt to serve as a base, add a colored pair of tights, a complimenting color sweater and voila :) If you just have to match, pick a patterned top that has some of your tights color in the pattern.
Patterned tights are a bit harder to pull of than solid colored tights, so to be safe, stay within the same color family and balance it out with lots of neutrals.
For legs that go for miles, try going monochromatic and wear the same color tights and shoes, preferable heels. I'm dying to try this look soon! I've seen photos and it looks gorgeous! :)
Above all, have fun. Through fashion rules out the window, if you want to wear five different colors in one outfits - than do so. :) After all, everyone finds the rainbow beautiful and it matches, so why shouldn't your outfit look beautiful in a rainbow of different colors?

Now, no matter how much I love my bold tights, this pair annoys me. They're made of the weirdest material that doesn't really stretch. And, they're constantly going down, a little a time, creeping down until it's just uncomfortable to walk so I have to sneak to the bathroom and pull them up - again. Awkward. :)

So I have to apologize ahead of time, but since this is the last week of classes and finals are next week, I'm not going to have much time to stop by and comment/read your blogs. I promise to catch up in a few weeks come winter break, but until then, things may slow down a bit in the blogosphere, at least from my perspective. :)

Through the cracks

Yesterday, my iPhone screen cracked - badly.
And it taught me a lesson, or two, yes my phone taught me some very important life lessons.
One, be super careful with your iPhone.
Two, you appreciate something so much more after it's damaged or you lose it.
I know that this isn't a life-altering lesson for most, in fact, it's almost become a cliche.
But you see, for me personally it turned out to be a big deal.
Now, when I look at my phone, I have a hard time imagining what my phone looked before it was damaged - I start to forget what normal looked like and start back-tracking and saying if only I didn't do that, or go there, or been more careful. And it's just a phone, dropped on accident. A silly phone accident.
But, what about the things that happen in our lives on a daily basis?
Another example from my personal life, is just this past week when I woke up Monday morning and pulled a neck muscle, ended up spending all day in bed to avoid fainting and seeing black spots at any attempt of movement. I was miserable. I started to appreciate my neck more, I realized how much I used that muscle, I started remembering how it used to be and wondering if I'm ever going to be able to feel normal again. After a few days, yes I started feeling normal and it made me happy. Then I again started taking it for granted. Only sometimes when I stretch a bit too much and feel a jolt of pain from the muscle that's still healing that I remember the days when I couldn't use my neck at all and feel thankful all over that I have a healthy and functioning body.
The point of this rambling? I need to learn to appreciate all the little, and big, things in my life a little more. The fact that I wake up every morning and have an opportunity to touch someone's life, to lend a helping hand, to give life one more try. The blessing that I have a big loving family - everyone is healthy and loved. The fact that I can smile and bring sunshine into someone's life, I can run and feel my heart thumping inside my body, I can jump in excitement, I can yell at the top of my lungs from sheer joy, I can hear a beautiful melody of early mornings - the birds and the wind. I'm so incredibly blessed, and a lot of times I take everything in my life for granted, and not even that, but I want more and better things.
Eventually, my screen will be fixed and replaced, and once more I'll start taking my phone for granted. It's just human nature. But, I hope this lesson engraves itself in my heart, reminding me to slow down, say thank you to God for all my incredible blessings and not take anything for granted. Because one day, it will be too late to tell that one person that I love them, or tomorrow I may not be able to chase my baby brother through the autumn leaves, or in a few decades I may not be able to see God's beautiful creations all around me. And no matter how sad any of those would be, I need to learn to appreciate every moment and blessing today, so that if ever I can't, I'll know that I never took it for granted, that I lived and loved, with every ounce of being in me. I was there, in the moment, and it was so beautiful and blessed.
All that from a cracked iPhone. Guess everything does happen for a reason! ;)
Although, I can't wait to get this screen fixed, the pieces of glass are starting to fall out and it makes me nervous - at least it still works.. :)

BLOG CHANGE ANNOUNCEMENT!!!!

First, I apologize for the scattered and sparse posts these past few weeks.
But you see, I wasn't feeling very satisfied doing outfit posts and anything else just to have a post.
I didn't like doing fluff posts - I wasn't interested in reading them, so why would anyone else?
So, I've been praying and debating on whether to close this blog.
It was just taking up so much time, and it wasn't benefiting me or anyone else, so what's the point of having it?
Instead of closing it though, I've come to the conclusion that I'll just change the content.
I want to go back to this blog's roots, my roots.
Specifically this first post, over a year ago.
I set goals for this blog, for myself and along the way, I seemed to have gotten lost.
So, from now on, yes, there will be some fashion and outfit posts, sometimes.
But, there will be more of wise thoughts, err, random rambling. :)
I want to talk about what really matters, my spiritual life, my confusion about a future career, my random creative outlets [which is where fashion falls] and all that stuff that makes up me.
So, I understand if you want to stop following, it's a drastic change from fashion and outfit posts.
But, I really do hope you stay. I want to write posts that will make you thing, maybe touch a life and make me reflect on myself and help me grow as a person.

DAILY OUTFIT: FLOWER CHILD

This outfit started with the pink/peach tights. [I found them on sale @ Marshall's, DKNY for $4 - of course, I had to buy them!] I swear they change colors depending on the light, or your mood ;) Then came the black turtleneck since my neck muscle still hurts and I'm supposed to keep it warm. Then came the skirt, because there aren't many colors that go with pink/peach tights. Then I just had to add a brooch, I couldn't decide between a flower and a dragonfly and ended up wearing both, which ended up looking like a flower from a distance. Love :) Finally came the scarf to add a pop of color and my sisters coat - which I kind of love. It's super comfy and warm, and the material is so smooth and beautiful!

I've been feeling quite unmotivated, it's the after Thanksgiving slump, as I call it. With only 2.5 weeks left of the semester and Christmas and a month off from school right around the corner, I feel like doing nothing. Not good, when finals are less than two weeks away, and there a ton of things to accomplish before Christmas break. Guess I better get motivated, and soon! Anyone else experiencing something like this?? :)

Now, time for some deep thinking. :) Sometimes, my self-esteem stoops so low. Like when I post outfit photos or even think about doing them, I feel like why? Most days, I don't think I dress very stylishly and don't think anyone cares. It's just clothes - nothing special. I look at other style blogs and stylish bloggers and feel like a misfit compared to the tall, lithe, stylish, adorable, designer and vintage clad ladies. Comparison and jealousy are ugly evils. And unfortunately, they seem to have a permanent place in my mind. I don't like it, but I struggle with them daily. I think they a play a huge part in my low levels of motivation lately. I've even thought about closing up this blog or even going a different direction. Mostly because, a) I feel totally fake and not pretty when it comes to outfit posts and b) some days, I think this blog and my role in it lacks substance. Like there are so much more important things to discuss instead of clothes. It's quite confusing at this stage. We'll see where this all goes. I've been doing a lot of praying and debating and I hope I see the path of this blog soon. Any thoughts? Advice? Anything would be appreciated.

On to more exciting stuff now. If you've been reading my blog for awhile, you know I was doing some remodeling. I've finally moved into my new space and slowly started turning it into a home. i still have quite far to go to achieve my vision, but already, the room/space have come a long way! :) Here are some sneak preview shots. More to come later! :)

Excuse the disappearance act from last week! But, I promise, I have good reasons!

Firstly, the last two days of school before Thanksgiving break were extremely hectic - I've been working on a huge semester long project for my investigative reporting class - a project on small businesses, and our rough draft, including the layout and extras was due before break. Lots of work and too many hours went into the project, and I'm quite happy with the result, but the final decision will come from my professor on Wednesday! Quite nervous to hear his opinion! I fear that he will tear it apart and say I have too many holes or something in my reporting. yes, my self-esteem is kind of in the dumps right now :)

Secondly, there was Thanksgiving break. A few glorious days off from my regular responsibilities. It was quite relaxing yet, productive. I've finally organized my new room and unpacked all the boxes, and I'm proud to say - got rid of a bunch of stuff I was hoarding. It's quite an amazing feeling to have so much less stuff, less clutter ;)

Come today, I was all ready to go back to school and work and my routine life, but when I woke up this morning, and reached over to look at the time, my neck made a horrible cracking sound and then I almost fainted while seeing black spots and the room spinning in circles. Since then, I had to cancel on school, work and other stuff, to spend all day in bed massaging my neck and doing absolutely nothing. Every time I move, I want to scream in pain. I've never pulled a muscle in my neck, and never want to again - it's quite painful!! I do hope it goes away by morning - hey, a girl can dream right???

Enough about me though, how was your Thanksgiving?? I do hope it was quite lovely filled with lots of laughter, delicious food and time spent with friends and family!

It's Friday - finally. I still have to work all day Saturday and have a test and a huge project due next week, but still, it makes me happy that it's Friday. There's just something about Friday. :)

Today's outfit is very simple and classic. This lace skirt has made an appearance on several style blogs and I know it's become a staple in my wardrobe. It's so cute and comfy can be worn pretty much with anything. Today, I paired it with a simple black top, classic beads and my new warm comfy sweater. It was quite perfect for another beautiful and somewhat chilly Fall day.

DAILY OUTFIT: BLACK & BROWN

Yes, I practically live in these boots. Today's outfit is boring and simple. Yesterday was a way long and hard workday followed by cramming/studying for a test late into the night, so this morning resulted in me waking up cranky, stressed, uninspired and with a bad headache. I pretty much pulled random things from my closet, pulled on my trusty boots, threw on a scarf because it was so cold, added my trusty black trench and running late, left to work. It took two very large cups of coffee before I could properly function and actually get anything accomplished at work ;)

Although there's lots to discuss, I have just enough brain power left to finish an outline due tomorrow before I'm out for the night. Better go study and get some sleep. Internship interview tomorrow morning! Wish me luck! :)

DAILY OUTFIT: I WON! I WON! I WON!

A few weeks ago, I entered a lovely giveaway over at Bun&Borough.
And I won. It was a quite amazing surprise. Truly.
I got to pick any top, bottom, accessory, and jacket off of Land's End Canvas website - a Thanksgiving outfit. It took me more than hour to pick something out - they have so many great classic pieces. I ended up going with the classic oxford blue striped button down, a grey wool wrap skirt, a cozy grey sweater jacket, a double belt and the perfect messenger bag.
I lovee, lovee, lovee my outfit. I think I was more excited than a kid at Christmas when my package came in the mail yesterday! I instantly tried on the clothes - everything fit amazing. Not only do all of these items look great together, but I can think of about at least a dozen ways to incorporate each piece into my wardrobe.
I think I'll be living in the sweater this late fall/early winter- it's so comfy and warm!
Also, I've been looking for a perfect messenger bag for school, and this one is great. I'm so excited to try it out.

I found this jacket on sale at a designer outlet store for about $3, it's by Ann Taylor LOFT so it's great quality. It's also become a staple in my wardrobe this fall. It's super cute, comfy and warm. It's a great alternative to a bulky coat, especially during this fall weather when it's not too hot and not too cold. :)

In other news, I'm back from my blogging break [minus one reader/follower, kind of makes me sad, but that's the blogging world!].

This week is the last full work/school week before Thanksgiving break so there are about a million and one things to do. I'll try to stay up to date on posting and outfit photos but I can't make any promises. :)

Well, back to homework and studying now (and maybe a break in between with CSI reruns).

Okay so technically I'm still on my little blog break, but 1. I miss the blogging world, gasp I know! 2. It's finally Friday so I have a few hours to breathe before I dive into tackling the amount of work already piled up for next week. and 3. This lovely lady gave me an award - A Stylish Blogger Award, no less!

Now, I'm supposed to say 7 facts about me and tag other people.

1. I have a desire to learn how to fly one day. Not like fly, fly, but become a pilot. To me, that seems to be one of the most freeing, powerful, amazing experiences. Yes, some think I'm crazy to want to do that ;)

2. I have no idea what I want to do with my life - too many choices - and sometimes that really scares me.

3. I know 3 languages. Fluently. English is actually my third language. It sounds exotic, but to me, it's just a way of life.

4. In 7th grade, I set a record at school of how many books one student read in the entire school year. I don't remember the exact number, but it was in the high hundreds. It was legit too - I just loved to read. I was still on the Principal's Honor Roll even though I skipped school a lot to stay home and read. Not sure how I accomplished this - apperantly it was quite genius. My language arts teacher gave me an award. Nerd. ;)

5. I sketch clothing designs all the time. You should see my notes for my classes. You could probably make a few seasons worth of clothes from all those designs. Others doodle hearts, I'm a little more complex, most days. ;)

6. I am incredibly blessed and most of the time I don't recognize this, sadly.

7. I have serious commitment issues. Why? No idea. But it's kind of a problem. Oh well. :)

I had to go out this morning and take some photos outside. It's so beautiful in Southwest, Missouri right now! Although the days are quite chilly, the sunshine is abundant, the air is crisp and the colors are beautiful!! Fall makes me happy. I don't want it to ever end. ;(

I spent quite a bit of time reading articles from a web magazine for Christian girls: Passion. There are so many great articles on there - for a Christian girl of any age. It definitely made me think about my priorities and my spiritual condition and the things I need to get rid of, improve on or do more of. So much to think about! :)

I think the article that stood out to me most is this one about God and His romance. The article mentions a book called Captivating by John & Stasi Eldredge [definitely ordering it and reading it soon!]. One of the quotes from the book is:

"Every song you love, every memory you cherish, every moment that has moved you to holy tears has been given to you from the One who has been pursuing from your first breath in order to win your heart. God's version of flowers and chocolates and candlelight dinners comes in the form of sunsets and falling stars, moonlight on lakes and cricket symphonies; warm wind, swaying trees, lush gardens and fierce devotion...This romancing is immensely personal. It will be as if it has been scripted for your heart. He knows what takes your breath away, what makes your heart beat faster...we must choose to open our hearts again so that we might hear His whispers, receive His kisses."

How amazing is this? God romances you with nature, with beautiful things, with a fierce and everlasting love. This article really effected me. It made me want to fall in love with this God, to have a relationship with Him, to be His.

Miss Falling in Love

I've been trying to get away from wearing black, and incorporating color, bold color into my wardrobe. Well, today's outfit, definitely was colorful! Honestly, I kind of felt like a clown today. ;) I was even told by some people that my outfit made them feel happy. Must be something about the bright yellow dress, triggering the sunshine feeling! ;)

Excuse the exhausted look. This is me after a super long day. I should really start taking pictures in the mornings or early afternoons when I look a little more alive, not something that was chewed up and spit out. Ick.

Which brings me to a more complicated topic. Envy. Lately, I've been seriously struggling with self-esteem issues and envy. I see a tall, skinny, gorgeous woman on the street and I instantly feel like an ugly, short ompa lumpa. I don't want to go into details, but it's something that has been bothering me.

Today, I found myself with an hour to spare before my night class so I popped into a coffee shop, grabbed some coffee, curled up in a chair and spent some time catching up on my Bible reading [which I have seriously neglected these past few weeks, I'm ashamed to say]. I was reading the book of James and this verse stood out to me: "For where envy and self-seeking exist, confusion and every evil thing are there" [James 3:16]. The verses go on to talk about true wisdom, but this verse really stood out to me.

I was ashamed to see that I find myself showing envy and self-seeking quite often. I look for ways to look prettier, skinnier, sexier, flirtier, and a million other things. I strive to be like someone, to fit the image of what pretty looks like as defined by the media and society's standards. And with one single verse, I was humbled. After all where there is envy and self-seeking, there is confusion and evil. Envy and self-seeking lead us to become confused about who we are as a person, what our purpose in life is, and most importantly, it leads us to sin and to change our appearance and our person. What a powerful verse. It really touched my heart and showed me that I should be focusing on other things that how to look prettier, more stylish, etc...

A few pages later, in 1 Peter 3:3-4 is this passage: "Do not let your adornment be merely outward - arranging the hair, wearing gold, or putting on fine apparel - rather let it be the hidden person of the heart, with the incorruptible beauty of a gently and quiet spirit, which is very precious in the sight of God".

Yet another thing I struggle with. So many times I fall into the trap of defining myself by the clothes I wear, or by my physical looks, but that's not what true beauty is. A woman is beautiful when she glows from the inside - her actions are pure, her life is good and God lives inside her heart. If a woman is beautiful on the inside then the outside reflects that beauty - a beauty that no fashion magazine or show or photographer can capture or recreate, yet everyone strives to.

Long post, sorry. But this has been an ongoing struggle for me, as I'm sure it has for many girls and women. It's something that's on my heart that I'm working on.

When I was editing this picture [it was too dark originally], the colors all got messed up, but you get the point. In reality, they really aren't that bright, for example the silky tank/shirt is actually a dark magenta.

In other news, I have a confession. I haven't taken an outfit photo in like two weeks. I wore this outfit two weeks ago from today. It's not because I've started dresseing sloppily or anything, it's because I simply don't have time to take photos!! By the time I get home from a busy and tightly packed day, it's so late and I'm so tired that I just want to get in my sweats and sleep. :( In fact, I really like some of the outfits I've worn in the past few days, so I hope to find some time this weekend to catch up on outfit photos!! :)

Now, it's back to work and school and a million other projects! gotta run! :)

THE FASHION SHOOT: PART 2

First of all, thank you so much for all the kind words and congratulations on my last post!! Thank you, thank you, thank you! Every single one of your comments made me glow - literally. You guys are seriously the best.

The night before the shoot I didn't sleep. Well, I slept a little. I tried to go to sleep on time so I could wake up bright and early and be prepared and wide awake. And I was in bed quite early for me, and I did get up early. The only problem is I didn't sleep much or very well in between. I kept waking up every few hours, more like jolting awake in my bed actually, and looking at my phone to see if it was time yet to get up. I had dreams about the shoot, I had nightmares about the shoot. I was excited, I was freaking out, I was in a state of nervous anticipation. So this shoot was kind of a big deal for me.

Miss officially completed my first professional fashion photo shoot :)

THE FASHION SHOOT: PART 1

The long-awaited day has arrived and passed. It was great, and totally worth all the work I put in the past few weeks. To update new readers: the past few weeks I've been planning a fashion shoot for my school newspaper on trends for college students for fall/winter 2010. I worked with local businesses to keep the shoot local.

The day of the shoot was yesterday, Sunday and took a total of about 4 hours.
I had 4 girl models and 1 guy model. The girls got their hair and makeup done by a local salon, MODA. The employees and the owner were amazing to work with - so kind and did a fabulous job! The clothes were donated by 4 local boutiques and the models were students from my school. We took quite a few shots around campus and the photos look great. The official spread will run in the school paper next Friday.

Problems I ran into the morning of the shoot: One boutique forgetting to put a second boot into the box (it was left on display). Since the store was closed, we had to go with the model wearing her own shoes, which thankfully matched what she was wearing. This boutique also forgot to add accessories. Then, our guy model couldn't make it due to the Halloween festivities that went a tad bit too late and hard. Thankfully, we found someone else about the same size to model the clothes. Still, it was too nervewrecking! Otherwise, things went pretty smoothly. :)

Here are a few shots I got of the girls getting their hair and makeup done. Then my camera died. :( But, tomorrow's post, PART 2, will show a preview of some of the professional photos we got! :)

UNDER THE TUSCAN SUN

Recently, I watched the movie Under the Tuscan Sun (2003).
And, I really liked it. A lot. I think it's one of my favorites now.
If you've seen it, you may wonder why I like it.
It's not really a love story, the plot really could use some work, and the characters aren't exactly famous celebrities. For many it's an okay film, to me it's perfect. [Critics give it a 6.7 on a scale of 10]
So here's why I like it:

I can relate to the character. No, I'm not recently divorced or a literature professor or in my thirties. But, I do hope to publish a novel one day and I do sometimes share the same frustrations with my life and the point of my life, as does the character.

I want her life. Specifically the run-down villa and her lifestyle at the end of the movie. It intrigues me, draws me in.

Some days, I dream of the fast paced, busy life. The success, the climbing of the corporate ladder, the money, the fame, the 16 hour days, you know, The Life. And it's attractive to me.

Most other days though, I wish I could move somewhere quiet, buy myself a run down little place, fix it up and spend my days writing the stories twirling around in my head, designing, reading, walking along the beach, shopping at the farmer's market, and enjoying life.

I'm not sure if that just means I need a vacation? I may get tired of the quiet and get bored, who knows? But, I do know that I shouldn't be having panic attacks when I think of what I still have to do. Not just one panic attack, but they happen quite frequently. I also should be getting more sleep and spending more time with my Bible, and God and my family. I shouldn't feel like I need a punching bag halfway thorough my day, or a nap, every day. I shouldn't dread getting up in the morning, half the mornings. I shouldn't be crying myself to sleep so often. My prayers should extend beyond a desperate wail of "Oh God, what am I doing with my life? I'm so lost and confused." I should be happier, more confident, more at peace. Which is why the private villa in the middle of nowhere in Under the Tuscan Sun sounds so attractive.

I know I'm not depressed or sad, most days are happy days and I accomplish a lot. And I do like my classes, and my jobs and everything, I just think it's too much and not prioritized correctly.

WINTER BOOTS: EH OR NAY?

On my lunch break today, I stopped by Charlotte Russe, and saw these boots on the half off cart - one pair, and in my size. They're super comfy, but I'm not if they're my style. They're only about $20, so I'm not sure if I should go back and buy them or pass? Do I need them? Maybe, I do need winter boots and these are comfy and cute and warm! And I only have black boots which have had a long life so I do need new boots for this winter - oh the decisions. So, what do you think?

Or this floral jumper - super cute and on clearance in my size for $7.99. I'm not sure if I would wear it or not, again, is it my style?
I've been so indecisive lately when it comes to buying clothes and shoes, it's ridiculous.

I wore this outfit to church one Sunday. Let me tell you, it felt weird to wear a long skirt since that's not what I usually wear. Still, I really liked the pattern on this skirt and really wanted to give the vintage skirt a try, so after this skirt hung out in my closet for a few weeks after the purchase, I finally wore it out. Not bad. :)

Last week, the lovely Haylie tagged me with a few questions. So, here are my answers! :)

1) What is your favorite movie?

Just one? :( Hard to say, so here are some of my favorites: Leap Year, Ever After, The Women, Letters to Juliet, and honestly? Any version of the "Cinderella story" is a favorite of mine :)

2) Do you have a secret/favorite place to go when you want to be alone?
I like to curl up in bed with my headphones in, music blaring, and hide under the covers. That or solo retail therapy, or a walk outside. :) Just depends on my mood and the reason I want to be alone ;)

3) Do you ever feel like some is behind you when you're alone?
Sometimes. Chalk it up to paranoia and one too many scary movies, sometimes ;)

4) What is your favorite miracle in the Bible?
This one is tough, they are miracles, so each one in itself is quite amazing, but I think I'll go with creation. I know technically that's not a miracle in the New Testatement way, but to me, it's the greatest miracle. The fact that God created every little thing on this Earth, each living and unique, yet making up an amazing big picture that is somehow tied together for the better good. Even our bodies alone function so amazingly while being unique, that discoveries are still being made after centuries. To me, that's a miracle, one that sometimes, our human minds are just too small and weak to comprehend.

5) Have you ever done something you regretted?
Sure, but recently I read a quote and it has kind of stuck to me: ‎"Regrets are a waste of time. They're the past crippling you in the present..." So, I'm working on learning from my mistakes, but not regretting any of them, because they have shaped me in one way or another and made me into the person I am today. :)

6) If you could be ANYONE for a day (dead or alive) who would you be?
The Queen of England, the President of the United States, anyone who has power to make change that will effect a lot of people, complete with the passion and resources needed to impact the lives of many people.

7) If you could be inside a book, what book would you like to be in?
A fashion book, or one that inspires, and uplifts. Something colorful, and intellegent and quite amazing! :)

8) If you could have one supernatural power (fly, super strength etc...) what would it be??
Well, it would be pretty awesome to fly, but not only am I quite scared of heights, but I think after a while the fascination would wear off and it would become lame, so if I could have any one supernatural power it would be....healing. By this I mean, I think it would be amazing to be able to soother people's wounds, not only physically, but more importantly mentally and wounds in the soul. I think it would be amazing to come up to a person who is hurting emotionally and be able to soothe their pain with a few gentle words or even a touch - to give them the strenght to go on, the hope to get up and try again and most importantly the faith to believe the impossible. Now, that would be amazing.

HOME DECOR HELP!

Last week, between running errands for work, I ran across yet another flea market in town, one that I have never visited, so of course, I stopped in to see what I can find.

As you know, I'm doing some remodeling, so I'm on the look out for great furniture and super cheap, yet with quality, so I've been spending a lot of my free time flea shop hunting.

As posted on my Facebook page this morning, I ran across this chair. It's at a sale price of only $35. I would have scooped it up, except I had a few reserves. Obviously, this chair has had a pretty long life, yet, it's condition is a lot better than most chairs I've seen in flea markets.

Still, I wanted to see if there was a way to modernize this chair, bring it back to life. I've seen DIY tutorials on blogs, but haven't saved any links so I have no idea how to go about fixing this chair up. Which brings me to some silly questions/requests.

Can this chair be salvaged?
Can I paint the wood black and/or white? Which color would be better for this type of wood?
Should I re-upholster it (is that even a word??), or let it be (wash of course), since I do like the color?
Is it worth it for the price?
How much would it cost to fix it up?

So, if you know anything about DIY home projects and home decor, I would love to hear what you have to say! I love to read decor blogs and have tons of "inspiration images" saved to my desktop, yet when it comes to actual DIY home projects, I'm kind of clueless.

I also ran across this tower. The Eiffel Tower perphaps? Looks like it. It's made out of metal and about to my waist. [$10] I'm seriously thinking about going back and getting it - to serve as a reminder that one day I'll be in Paris! ;)

I've also been eyeing these end tables for quite some time. They've recently been slashed down from $22 each to $15 - I really need to go buy them before anyone else snatches these up. They are in great condition, and glass tables are exactly what I had in mind for my newly remodeled room. The thing holding me back? I have yet to set up my bed, and I'm worried that the end tables may be too short for the sides of my bed, making it look awkward and inconvenient, so we'll see.

I've mentioned before on the blog that there should be a magazine dedicated to inspiring women with profiles on all the amazing women - ordinary and otherwise - and the amazing things they do. I think that this girl - Marisol Valles Garcia, would be amazing to interview and know. She is a 20-year-old college student who is now the mayor of a Mexican town. That in itself is a big deal, but the fact that the organized crime violence is at great rates and rising, killing many public officials, makes her position so much more powerful. My prayers go out to her as she goes about her new responsiblities.

"Afraid? Everyone is afraid and it's very natural. What motivates me here is that the project [to make the community safer] is very good and can do a lot for my town. I know that we are going to change and remove this," says Marisol Valles García.

Welcome back to SMH - I do hope you had a fabulous weekend, complete with heels and lounging around! ;)

I hope you don't mind the photo galore today.

Sunday afternoon I spent out with two of my sisters. We went out to eat and later went exploring with our camera. The day was so beautiful, the skies so gorgeous, and the temperature just perfect!

My Outfit of the day:

I'm kind of wearing so many different trends in this outfit, yet I loved it. I tried the whole fancy socks with shoes thing - worked out pretty well I think. Since I'm shorter, they looked better pulled up to my knees then at my ankles - at least with this outfit. I definetely think I'll be wearing this trend again.

A few weeks ago I found this leather skirt on clearance at New York & Company - for $10! And, it wasn't super short- it was actually below my knee, not too tight, and just right. I was quite excited :)

Most of my outfit I found on sale - trends that I've wanted to try, but not investment classics, so I'm glad I didn't have to waste a lot of money. :)

MIDTERMS WEEK

Excuse me while I study away for mid-terms this week and most of next week.

Complete with Pandora playing Glee songs, stacks of books and notebooks and about a dozen powerpoints to be memorized into an already full brain.

Praying God gives me wisdom and strength to get through the next six days until Fall Break a week from today.

Okay, back to memorizing databases, hardware components and general IT terms for my Management Information Systems exam in a few hours. Oh joy. :(

CLOSET ORGANIZATION

I'll probably be moving into my newly remodeled room soon - hopefully next week. I'm quite excited, because the closet space is huge. Right now it's just a big empty room with one or two wire shelves. I would love to have a custom closet with wooden shelves and lots of organizational little nooks, at a minimum like this:

But, unfortunately, that is super expensive and I'm supposed to be saving money for my study abroad trip this June, not on closets, so my closet fantasy will have to be put on hold for a year or so. :( For now, it will be just the basics!

Usually, every 3-6 months, I take a day to go through my closet and get rid of things I don't wear and completely clean it out. I've put it off for awhile now, since I'll be moving soon and I plan to clean it out then. This means that my closet is bursting at the seams, cluttered and lacking its organization. Not only does it annoy me, but it also makes getting dressed in the morning totally frustrating.

I've heard of different ways stylists help clients organize their wardrobes, so as a closet wanna be stylist, I'm thinking of attempting a closet makeover for my wardrobe. Here are some of the ideas I've been wrestling around with:

I'm thinking of taking a few hours (or even better a day!!) to clean out and purge my closet. This includes, making all those piles: laundry, tailor, donation, re-sell, and keep.
After the closet purge, I'm hoping to take some more time to go through all the clothes I have and style them - mostly for fall and winter since that is the seasons that are coming up first. I'm not sure whether I want to model each outfit, or use a manequin, but I want to take photos of every singe outfit I have styled for future reference.
I hope to plan outfits for every possible event/situation - from weddings to school wear. This includes the entire outfit - shoes, accesories, coats, etc...
I hope to mix and match outfits and find as many ways as humanley possible to wear each piece in my closet. Even if it doesn't seem very cute to me at the time, you never know - one day I might feel like wearing something in that fashion! :)
After I take hundreds (hopefully!!) of photos - I hope to develop them and either start an album (organized by occasion), and/or an inspiration board/wall with outfit ideas. Something like this perphaps? [photo source unknown - some magazine]

Shoe storage/organization. Remember this post? I'm super excited to try out some of these ideas!! :)

I realize this project is going to take a lot of time, but I think it may be an investment. I think it will save me tons of time getting dressed in the morning, and keep my closet neat and organized since I won't have to try on a million things each morning. I really hope that I have time for this project during Fall Break next week! If I do get around to it, do look forward to updates! :)

Until then, I'll be clipping away at fashion magazines and going through all those "inspirational images" saved to my computer, as well as visiting weardrobe and chictopia and my favorite style blogs for outfit inspiration, so when it comes time to style all my clothes, I have something inspiring gathered together! :)

INTERVIEW WITH TEENY ARTIST

Last year, in my Business Foundations class, I met a lovely young lady - Fallan. She is a talented jewelry artist, who one day is going to be a very successful and well-known jewelry designer - I just know it! :) I'm quite honored that this sweet lady took a few minutes to do an interview with yours truly. So read on for tons of inspiration and wise words! :)

Y: What kind of creative work do you do?

F: I design and make handmade jewelry.

Y: How did you first get into it?

F: For years I have thought of cool ideas for jewelry, but I could never find them anywhere. So, with being creative and artsy, I decided to use my ideas and talent to make jewelry that suited my tastes.

Y: What inspires you to create something beautiful?

F: A variety of things! Special moments in my life, other art, music, poetry, movies, celebrities, my study abroad trip to Italy (those people have serious style!). Sometimes looking at things completely unrelated to art will inspire a new design, it’s wonderful!

Y: Describe your ideal day.

F: A perfect day for me would be having nowhere to be and nothing to do, so that way I could create jewelry and make up new designs guilt free.

Y: What does beautiful look like to you?

F: Beautiful is out of the ordinary, not necessarily “perfect”. Something well made and that resonates that it is loved.

Y: What does success mean to you?

F: Success means finishing a challenging piece, being recognized by a jewelry magazine, people admiring my work. Money is simply icing on the cake.

Y: Would you rather be rich and unhappy OR poor and happy?

F: Poor and happy! I don’t do “unhappy”-not a pretty picture!

Y: What is your major? Minor(s)?

F: I am majoring in Fine Arts and Arts Administration (so hopefully I won’t be so poor!).

Y: What do you want to be/do when you grow up (aka graduate)?

F: I want to be a jewelry designer. I daydream of having my jewelry in Vogue!

I woke up this morning with a stuffy nose, a bad sinus headache and a slight fever. Correction, I woke up at the crack of dawn for a 7:30 am meeting/presentation. I'm trying to start a new organization on campus with two of my friends and one of the final steps of getting approved by the university as an organization is to present your idea to the Student Affairs Committee, which is what we did this morning. I think the presentation went relatively well and we had good answers to all the questions we were asked by the committee so now we just have to wait to hear if we got approved! :)

We're hoping to start an organization that sets up mentoring relationships between college students and local high school juniors and seniors so that the college students can help give one on one attention to high school students as they apply to college, for scholarships and even their first job. We also would like to not only provide community service opportunities for those who need to gain some volunteering hours/experience, but also to host professional development workshops for college and high school students. In these workshops, we hope to cover things like resume writing and proper interview attire, as well as help build a network of local business owners to serve as mentors and guest speakers. I'm quite excited about it, even though we still have a ton of work to do!

An update on the fashion shoot: It's been scheduled for October 24th and today I spoke to some local boutiques and a hair salon - a lot of people have shown interest in participating which makes the whole fashion shoot idea seem so much more real! I'm still ironing out the details, but the basics are in place! :)

Now, I'll be signing off and curling up with a cup of hot tea and reruns of CSI. Homework and my extra-long to do list can wait until my poor head clears up and I can think straight! :)
